Schubert Unfinished

Sometimes when we rehearse a piece that’s already familiar, it’s hard to approach it artistically without falling into a routine. I thought it might be worth looking at Schubert’s songs to see if there are some answers there. Here’s one from the song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey). Pay attention to the poetry! and let me know what you think.

I played Unfinished in high school and i was totally bored! I’m embarrased to say it’s the only Schubert I know. Its definitely helpful to hear the song and I’m excited to play it again. The orchestra sounds great.

Generally I don’t like singers that much (too silly) but this is cool. Not silly AT ALL. He’s exploring some serious territory. There is definitely a relationship to the music in the symphony.

I hope you can talk a little bit more about poetry at rehearsal. Not sure if I got it from this song. I mean, I don’t really know what it’s all about. Just a thought. Thanks.
