Fall term information

Welcome and welcome back.

As you know, I’ve been on sabbatical since January. I’m excited about the upcoming school year, and I look forward to working with you.

STRING AUDITIONS will be similar to previous years, taking place the first week of class (Tue 11-3, Wed 9am-11, Thu 11-3). I will post sign-up sheets on my office door (Lincoln Hall 245B) the week before classes start, but you can also email me to request a time. I would like to hear scales and sight reading, as well as whatever music you are currently working on.

This year, I understand Ed Higgins will be conducting Wind Symphony and Jeff Peyton will be conducting Concert Band. My guess is that WIND PLACEMENT AUDITIONS will be similar to previous years. There will be auditions the first week of class, so keep an eye out for posted information. In the past, wind players have been asked to play two contracting excerpts, as well as scales and sight reading.

I would like to hear your best playing, so please take the next few weeks to prepare carefully. I am listening for all the usual things: sound quality, intonation, rhythm, articulation, phrasing and musicianship.

In the fall term, we are focusing on classical repertoire, so I won’t be auditioning low brass until January.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. kselden@pdx.edu
